Running in the Family

Recently I had an assignment for my English class that was in response to us reading Running in the Family by Michael Ondaatje. Ondaatje writes an autobiography on the history of his family, it's a creative mixture of fiction and facts. It is also the author's own attempt ti find understanding in his own identity through learning more about his parents and relative.

My assignment was to do a Visual or write collage about my family or an aspect of my family, an event, experience, specific member etc. I wanted to do something visually creative because I always jump at the opportunity to do an 'un-academic' assignment so to say. :P But this assignment was during the time that I was sick so 1) I couldn't think of anything awesome enough for my liking and 2) when I finally came up with a mediocre idea I was too sick to have the energy to go out and get the supplies needed. Thus, I decided to write a creative paper. Then I had to pick what to write about, after sifting through some options in my head, I decided to write about my mom - my crazy mom. My writing style that I chose was my talking style and my point to prove was that I'm not the crazy one, rather, my mom is... well and some other points...
I've decided to share this assignment on here, because I think it should be known how crazy my mom is :P :)
So here goes:
I Come by it Honestly
They tell me I’m crazy. Ridiculous. Loud. Overwhelming. Or simply that I’m too much to handle. Sometimes I can be outrageous or blunt – I’m a ‘get to the point’ kinda girl. I get it all the time. It’s who I am; it’s who God made me to be. But I’d like to say to all those who think these absurd things about me, that I come by them honestly.
It’s my mom I tell ya. She’s the crazy[1] one, not me. She’s the one that is ridiculous and loud and sometimes overwhelming. She’s the one that is outrageous, blunt and to the point. And when I say ‘to the point’ I really mean ‘TO THE POINT.’ There is no beating around the bush for that woman. Oh yeah, and don’t even THINK about calling my mom a lady, because she is FAR from a lady. She’s loud, she speaks her opinion, she doesn’t wear skirts, heals, lipstick or spend hours on her hair. Rather she’s a T-shirt, jeans, bare feet in Birkenstocks (year round, no joke!), spiky, highlighted, short hair kinda woman. Oh and on a side note, she dyes her hair; underneath the colour it’s actually grey. She thinks it’s a sign of old age, but in my opinion it’s just a sign of all that wisdom she’s accumulated through her life.
There are all kinds of moms out there in the world: the boring moms, annoying moms, embarrassing moms, non-existent moms (sadly), depressed moms, and the happy moms… the list could really go on, but I have to draw the line somewhere and get to my point, (so maybe sometimes it takes me a bit to get to the point…). My mom can be a boring, annoying, or an embarrassing mom, but this doesn’t happen often. As far as I know, my mom isn’t non-existent or depressed, she appears to be pretty happy to me, especially the last few years now that I’ve left the house – oh I mean now that she has grandchildren! My mom is a fun mom! She’s crazy so she’s got to be fun! She knows how to have a good time even if it is SUPER ridiculous or silly. She enjoys a good joke (but most of the time I don’t understand the joke, unless they’re cheesy jokes just go right over my head, like a speedy train going over a bridge on the fourth of July), she has a great sense of humour and her laugh is of the contagious kind. It bubbles out in a flow from the depths of her gut or erupts rather loudly like a volcano, catching those around by surprise. You can tell something is really funny when her face turns red as a beat and tears come into her eyes and she’s still roaring with laughter. It’s crazy I tell ya, plum crazy.
My mom is a busy woman! She does EVERYTHING it seems, well except clean the house (often)…or bake or cook extravagant meals like many moms. She says herself; she’s not domestic at all! But that’s ok! We all pitch in around the house (well when I’m actually home I do) and things get done, the house gets tidied, food cooked, laundry done and sometimes cookies even baked! My mom may not be a domestic mom but she sure is a SOCCER mom! Like the most soccer-ish of soccer moms you can imagine! Think for a moment what you’d expect the biggest soccer mom to be…. Ok got it? Alright, well she’s that and then some. Growing up she coached my teams, in my town and at my school. She came to ALL my games and ALL my practices, summer and winter. For my brother too! She got her coaches certificate, she’s a referee (one of the best female refs out there), and her job is soccer – administrator of the Cobourg Soccer Club. She not only watches soccer but she PLAYS soccer, not on one, but TWO teams in the summer and all through the winter! But wait there’s more! Get this, we, my mom and I, play soccer TOGETHER now! We play on the same competitive team and against each other in a recreational league. Twice a week we’re on the field, one night as teammates, another as rivals. What makes this even more awesome is that she’s a keeper and I’m a striker… some nights I just can’t get that ball past her, but then that’s ok on the nights that I don’t want the ball to go past her. Crazy soccer mom eh?
Not only is she soccer crazy but she’s a computer geek! She’ll take computers apart and put them back together or something weird like that. This I don’t get from her at all! She helps me with MY computer problems. She’s involved at my church, and still involved at my elementary school, she sings in a quartet with a few friends, bass or alto is her note. There are many other things she’s done over the years but soccer is pretty much what takes up much of her time now a days, that and her family.
My mom isn’t just crazy. Even though this is a huge aspect of who she is and what makes her so fun, there’s a whole other side of her. That would be her childhood – her mischievous and misbehaved years.
Just kidding!
I don’t want the next bit to come off cheesy, although it may, but I’m just stating it as it is. My mom is a woman who loves the Lord and loves those around her. She cherishes her family, her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, etc (big Dutch family). But most noticeable is her love for her husband, her kids and definitely her grandkids! She has a kind and compassionate heart. She gives of herself to those around her constantly. I’ve seen her be a friend not only to her friends but to others. She’s understanding, down to earth and doesn’t appear to get too stressed about anything – her daughter’s wedding included! I’m not saying that my mom is the perfect person; she does have her faults as do all people, but in my eyes she’s a pretty wonderful person and the best mom a girl could have. It appears that her craziness has run in the family affecting me of all people, but I sure hope some of her more admirable characteristics  run in the family – affecting me! (not that I don’t admire her craziness, most times I appreciate it…even when it does seem annoying when I’m in a crummy mood).

My mom (Yvonne), dad (Ed) and I – September 24, 2011

I could go on and write my undergrad thesis on my mom, my dad (don’t even get me started on that stubborn and sarcastic DutchmanJ) and hey, why not my whole family. I could share more stories, more wonderful things about these people in my life, or I could just stop here with this brief summary of my crazy mom whom I love. And one of the greatest things I love about her is her craziness!
So thanks for being so crazy mom!

[1] Anytime the word crazy is used, it’s meant in the BEST way possible .

Well that's it folks - my crazy Mom! :D
but that's the way I like it.
